Meet André Maier

André Maier grew up in Münster, Germany. The path that led to a thriving career in photography took him not only from country to country, but also from discipline to discipline. From Molecular Biology studies at TU Berlin to King’s College London, he eventually dedicated himself to his passion — photography — at the prestigious London College of Printing. Before long André’s relaxed and creative photojournalism was featured in magazines and he had the opportunity to photograph many extraordinary events and people, including the Dalai Lama.

André lives with his wife (artist Sylvia Maier), their two sons, and two labrador retrievers in Brooklyn.  When Sylvia was pregnant with their first son in 2000, they staged a conceptual “family portrait” calling it “Giving Birth to Art”.  As a family, they have created a new tableau twice a year ever since.   The family series has now become a history of their family and even though the photos are far from reality, the series has become a story and reflection of the 4 family members as a team, as individuals, and as artists.

André takes similar photos as commissions for other families and also documents weddings and events in his unique photojournalistic style.  The transition to photojournalistic wedding photography was seamless thanks to André’s natural curiosity, serenity, and ability to make his subjects look like the best version of themselves. At weddings, he is a covert observer, capturing personalities and relationship dynamics without exerting outside influence on the proceedings. This is not in-your-face wedding photography. Ultimately, André’s shooting style is comprehensive and unprompted. Every photo tells a story – the real story of one of the most important days in a couple’s life.
